Community Disaster Education (CDE)
Did you know only 2 in every 10 Americans feel prepared for a major disaster, yet 82% said they would take the steps to get prepared if only they knew how? The American Red Cross is here to help. By taking part in CDE programs, you and your family will not only be helping yourselves get prepared, you will also be helping the Red Cross in fulfilling its lifesaving mission. A disaster can strike at any moment, the Red Cross wants to show you how to be ready.
Disaster Supplies Kit
In the event you need to evacuate at a moment's notice and take essentials with you, you will probably not have the opportunity to shop or search for the supplies you and your family will need. Every household should assemble a disaster supply kit, before a disaster, and keep it up to date.
Workplace Disaster Supplies Kit
For the workplace, where you might be confined for several hours, or perhaps overnight, the following supplies are recommended.
Preparing For Disaster Brochure
You can cope with disaster by preparing in advance and by working with your family as a team. Follow the steps in this booklet to be prepared. Knowing what you do is your best protection and your responsibility.
Chemical Emergencies
Under certain conditions, chemicals can be poisonous or have a harmful effect on your health. Some chemicals, which are safe, and even helpful in small amounts, can be harmful in larger quantities or under certain conditions. Chemical accidents do happen... at home and in the community, and the American Red Cross wants you to be prepared.
Shelter in Place in an Emergency
One of the instructions you may be given in an emergency where hazardous materials may have been released into the atmosphere is to shelter-in-place. This is a precaution aimed to keep you safe while remaining indoors (this is not the same thing as going to a shelter in case of a storm). Shelter-in-place means selecting a small, interior room, with no or few windows, and taking refuge there. It does not mean sealing off your entire home or office building. If you are told to shelter-in-place, follow the instructions provided in this fact sheet.
Be Red Cross Ready
It's important that you be prepared for possible disasters and other emergencies. Natural to human-caused disasters can strike suddenly, at anytime, anywhere. There are three actions everyone can take that can help make a difference.
